As a computer network Technician, I’ve seen my share of mistakes. While I have worked with many different types of networks, and setups, the one thing that is consistent on every network is a list of the valid IP addresses on the local area network. Sometimes this list is in a spreadsheet, sometimes it is just in a text file. While there are many ways to create this list, often times, they are manually entered by the administrator. This is a pain to maintain, and can be prone to errors, especially if the administrator is tired or rushed. The solution to this is to write a script that will take a list of IP addresses, and check each one with a ping to make sure it is valid.

There are plenty of resources on the internet to help you find invalid IP Addresses on your network. However, most of these are either security firms or companies selling a product. As such, they can be expensive and may not be worth the price. Although I am not the originator of this method, I did come across it in a Reddit discussion on the topic.

3. NetCrunch

Every device connected to the network has an IP address of some sort, and a good network monitoring program knows how to blacklist certain IP addresses or grant access to them.

NetCrunch is one such tool that gives you a suite of server monitoring tools, including the ability to decide who has access to your servers and see everything that goes in and out.

This includes the ability to look up IP addresses of devices and manage them, in that you decide which IP addresses are allowed to connect to the network and what level of access and permissions the IP addresses associated with the network have.

Based on this, you can grant or restrict access to data, control bandwidth usage and much more.

You can search for new hosts on your network by simply entering the IP network (initial IP address/network mask) and NetCrunch will perform an IP address lookup and locate each device and the services running on it.

Depending on your monitoring needs, you can define a filter policy that only identifies or adds devices of interest.

You can also search via Active Directory or add a list of nodes from a CSV file to NetCrunch.
